The Game Awards Winners 2024
The Game Awards 2024 has ended, marking a significant milestone as we celebrate 10 years of honouring excellence in the gaming industry. This year's event attracted an impressive audience, showcasing a remarkable lineup of awards and announcements that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The competition for Game of the Year was fierce, featuring standout titles such as the charming Astro Bot, the addictive Canadian card game Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong, the epic Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the innovative Metaphor: ReFantazio, and the expansive Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. The big winner of the night was Astro Bot, who took home the coveted Game of the Year award. Congratulations to the team on this well-deserved recognition! Both Balatro and Astro Bot also shone brightly, Balatro scoring three and Astro Bot four awards throughout the evening.
In a historic moment, Melina Juergens became the first individual to win Best Performance twice in The Game Awards' history for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, setting a new standard for excellence in voice acting.
This year's ceremony was not just about awards; it was also a platform for exciting new game announcements. Among the highlights were:
- Rematch
- Witcher 4 from CD Projekt Red, featuring Ciri as the main character
- A brand-new standalone co-op game from FromSoftware and Bandai, titled Elden Ring: NightRein, set for release in 2025
- Gameplay footage from Fumito Ueda and Gen Design
- The Outer Worlds 2 by Obsidian Entertainment
- Split Fiction from Hazelight Studios, known for their previous Game of the Year winner, It Takes Two.
- The Canadian-made title Blackfrost: The Long Dark II by Hinterland Studios
- The highly anticipated Borderlands 4 from Gearbox and 2K Gaming
- Capcom's Okami sequel
- Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet by Naughty Dog
Additionally, we witnessed collaborations such as Clive Rossfield in Tekken 8, a special announcement for Virtua Fighter by Sega to commemorate the 10th anniversary, and new titles like Project Century, Turok Origins, and Capcom's upcoming Onimusha: Way of The Sword, scheduled for 2026. Other notable mentions included Nexon Games' Arad: Dungeon Fighter, Hunt: Showdown 1896 - Post Malone's Murder Circus, and previews for Squid Game Season 2 alongside its game adaptation.
In terms of musical performances, we enjoyed sets from Snoop Dogg, Twenty One Pilots, and The TGA Orchestra, which added an electrifying atmosphere to the event.
A significant addition this year was the introduction of a new award: The Game Award Game Changer. Amir Satvat received this honour for his outstanding work in community building within the gaming industry, particularly in light of recent layoffs that have affected many. Geoff Keighley took a moment during the broadcast to acknowledge these challenges, emphasizing the importance of supporting those impacted. Amir's poignant statement, "You can't make great games without great people," resonated with myself and many viewers.
As we reflect on this ten year milestone anniversary of The Game Awards, I am filled with optimism for the future of gaming. With so many exciting titles on the horizon—the next decade promises to be filled with innovation and creativity like no other.
Here’s to hoping that the next ten years will bring even more memorable experiences and advancements in gaming. We look forward to next year!
