Spirit City: Lofi Sessions Review

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions Review

Since I stumbled upon Spirit City: Lofi Sessions by Mooncube Games, my productivity has definitely improved and gotten a lot cuter. This game's amazing fusion of productive gamification and clean gaming has kept me productive and introduced a cute and calm sense of relaxation into my life.

I immediately noticed the game's wholesome appearance. You can furnish your bedroom with furniture and even a custom avatar. The watercolor-style pastel graphics and color palette emit a soothing atmosphere that immediately calms you down.

The real mood-setter is the sound. The game's Lofi playlists provide a soothing background for the task. You can alternate between ambient sound effects like rain, crackling fire, or thunderstorms to create your own sound environment perfect for relaxation or focus.

It is worth noting that this game was recently nominated at the 2025 Canadian Game Awards for Best Score/Soundtrack, which recognizes the achievement for a game soundtrack. It has to present a high quality of integration within the game as well as its impact on the game experience... a perfect fit for this game! Behind the guise, Spirit City is also a productivity application that disguises itself as a relaxing game. It boasts numerous functionalities that will keep you productive and on schedule:

  • Task lists for task management
  • A Pomodoro timer for productive work blocks
  • Habit Tracker for Creating Successful Habits
  • A journal for reflective writing

They are unique in how they're integrated into the game world around them. As you play with them, you build up experience points that allow you to unlock new customization options and discover spirits - the game's sweet companions that enhance the beauty of the world around you.

And the spirits are one of the most charming things about the game. These little things are found by setting up certain situations in your room, such as reading on a rainy night or working in your room at sunrise. Finding all the spirits makes for an excellent piece of meta-game that gets you trying out all sorts of productivity situations.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions on Steam
Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a gamified focus tool, set to a soothing lofi soundtrack. Discover and collect Spirits, customize your cozy virtual space, and facilitate your real-life tasks with a collection of handy features designed to improve concentration and ease stress.

Although Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is very engaging, there are boundaries. While the task management system itself works well enough, certain higher-order functionalities are missing that would satiate the user's needs. Sub-tasks aren't handled, and from what I can tell so far, there's no long-term planning for projects that would limit more sophisticated workflows. The game is currently available on the PC and Steam Deck now, which makes usability less for the user who does most of the work on other machines. Having mobile or Mac access makes it all the more valuable as a work companion.

Despite these small imperfections, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a uniquely calming and uplifting space to work and study. It is not a conventional game with objectives or narratives but a pleasant companion that renders productivity comfortable and enjoyable.

It's a breath of fresh air for those who have difficulty concentrating or want to inject a little whimsy into their work lives. It's a witness to the ability of gamification to make even the most mundane task fun and rewarding.

As the game continues to be developed and enhanced by the developers, I am curious where this entertaining productivity software will lead us. It has become my daily companion, keeping me productive and engaged with cute spirits and soothing Lofi music.

If you need something to boost your productivity or just want something to bring that homey vibe into work sessions, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is well worth trying. This gamified focus tool gets an 8 out of 10 from me. It's a great way to change things while trying to focus, especially if you are a Lofi lover like myself. However, I do wish sub-tasks were available. This game has some room to grow, and I know some exciting DLC is coming soon - so I will be excited to check that out! All in all... You have been warned: you may become somewhat obsessed with the new virtual work retreat.
