Darkest Dungeon II Expands with Free Secrets of the Coven Update

Red Hook Studios has unveiled Secrets of the Coven, the second free adventure module for Darkest Dungeon II’s Kingdoms game mode. Launched on April 14, 2025, for PC and Mac via Steam, the update introduces a sinister witch cult faction, a new questline, and mechanics like in storage and item selling—features heavily requested by the community. A console release is slated to follow shortly.
Players must dismantle the Coven’s occult influence while navigating fresh challenges. The module emphasizes strategic depth with improved hero path comparisons and loot adjustments, including reduced trinket drop rates and modified enemy scaling tied to escalating difficulty tiers. Combat encounters now allow retreats (66% success rate) at the cost of penalties like stress or lost rewards.
The update addresses player feedback by streamlining inventory management. Inn storage provides much-needed flexibility, while the ability to sell excess items optimizes resource allocation. Creative Director Chris Bourassa highlighted the module’s distinct identity, noting its “darker, more insidious atmosphere” compared to the Beastmen-focused Hunger of the Beast Clan.
Discounts and Future Content
To celebrate the launch, Darkest Dungeon II’s base game is 50% off on Steam until April 21, with DLCs The Binding Blade and Inhuman Bondage discounted by 25% and 20%, respectively. The latter DLC arrives on Xbox Series X|S on April 17. A third Kingdoms module is planned for late 2025, completing the trilogy of free campaigns.

The game is accessible on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PC platforms. The Kingdoms mode, alongside Inhuman Bondage, debuted on PC in January 2025, redefining the game’s structure with persistent hero rosters and region-based strategy.
This update marks a significant step forward for Darkest Dungeon II, blending new narrative elements with quality-of-life improvements that will appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers.
