In the latter part of August, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on a blackbox mission in the world of Assassin's Creed Mirage. As is tradition with games in the Assassin's Creed series, this installment boasts an awe-inspiring and immersive landscape. The game's setting is none other than the vibrant city of Baghdad, set in the year 861. Within this particular blackbox mission, we follow the journey of our protagonist, Basim, as he embarks on an early quest to assist an old friend facing shipping difficulties. Some of you may recognize Basim from Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which marked my introduction to the Assassin's Creed universe.
The mission at hand emphasized stealth, and while I initially endeavored to maintain a discreet approach, circumstances eventually forced me to employ... a more direct, confrontational approach. This blackbox mission ran for approximately two hours of gameplay, during which I encountered a diverse array of characters, including the familiar face of another Assassins' Creed Valhalla NPC, Roshan. Although my demo was limited to a 1080p resolution, the full game promises to deliver in 4k quality and I cannot wait for every additional pixel. Even while playing remotely with somewhat high latency, the game ran smoothly, mirroring the intuitive gameplay mechanics found in other Assassin's Creed titles.
What intrigued me most while playing was the skill map that teased a variety of intriguing abilities that I'm eager to experiment with in the future including abilities like Chain Assassination which allows you to multikill assassinate using your throwing knives. As someone new to the old style of the Assassin's Creed world, Ubisoft has told us that that Mirage returns to the franchise's roots, recapturing the essence of what makes an Assassins' Creed game truly remarkable.
What I am expecting from this storyline is being fully immersed in a classic Assassin's Creed world that channels the likes of Ezio, Edward, Bayek and more, all while bringing the vibrancy of early days Baghdad to life. Personally, I am eagerly anticipating the chance to fully immerse myself in Basim's adventurous journey when the game is released, and can already tell that Ubisoft will have us buckled into the Animus now more than ever.
Assassin's Creed Mirage will be released on October 5 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, and on PC. So see you in the Animus, and again thank you to Ubisoft for letting me play this early access blackbox mission.
